Proton, Malaysia’s inaugural car manufacturer, embarked on its automotive journey with a bold national vision when it was founded on May 7, 1983. Driven by the aspirations of then-Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Proton was established to bolster Malaysia's industrial capabilities. The company’s genesis was marked by its partnership with Mitsubishi Motors, which paved the way for the production of the Proton Saga, the first Malaysian car, introduced on July 9, 1985. This model, based on the Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore, quickly became a national symbol of industrial achievement. Over the years, Proton has expanded its lineup and capabilities, often punctuated by significant milestones such as the release of the Proton Wira in 1993, and later, the introduction of models like the Proton Prevé in 2012, which was the first Malaysian car to earn a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program.
