Samsung Motors was founded in South Korea in 1994 as an automotive subsidiary of the Samsung Group conglomerate, entering a domestic market already dominated by Hyundai, Kia, and Daewoo. The venture was short-lived as an independent operation; the 1997 Asian financial crisis severely damaged the company, and Renault acquired a controlling stake in 2000, rebranding the operation as Renault Samsung Motors. Under Renault ownership, the brand continued selling vehicles in South Korea under the Samsung name through a licensing agreement, producing models closely related to Renault platforms. The SM3, SM5, and SM7 formed the core of the lineup, spanning compact, midsize, and large sedan segments respectively, with the SM5 and SM7 in particular finding a loyal following among Korean buyers who valued their European-derived engineering and conservative styling. As of the early 2020s, Renault restructured its Korean operations and phased out the Samsung branding, transitioning to selling vehicles under the Renault name directly in that market.
