Maruti Suzuki India Limited, a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation, was founded as Maruti Udyog Limited in 1981 through a joint venture between the Government of India and Suzuki. The company inaugurated its primary manufacturing plant in Gurugram, Haryana, in 1982. Historically, the Indian government held the majority ownership in Maruti, with Suzuki initially having only a 26% stake. Over the years, the Indian government decreased its ownership and in 2003, partially exited the venture.
