The Cupra Leon KL is the first generation of the Leon to wear the Cupra name as a standalone brand identity, arriving in 2020 after SEAT formally separated Cupra into its own marque in 2018. Built on the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform and offered in both hatchback and estate body styles, it carries a range of turbocharged petrol engines alongside plug-in hybrid variants, with the top petrol outputs drawing from the same engine family used across the wider VW Group performance lineup. The estate version, badged Sportstourer, gave the generation a practicality dimension that earlier hot Leon variants rarely prioritised. Its significance lies in being the generation that had to establish Cupra's credentials as a credible independent performance brand rather than simply a trim level.
