Originally developed by Daewoo, the vehicle was first introduced as the Daewoo Matiz in 1998. In 2002, General Motors acquired Daewoo Motors, which led to the vehicle being marketed under various GM marques and nameplates.
The third generation of the Chevrolet Spark was primarily sold under the Chevrolet brand in North America and as the Holden Barina Spark in Australia and New Zealand. In 2015, the fourth generation was launched as the Holden Spark in Australia and New Zealand.
